Using Streaming Audio & Video on the GHCA website.

By Webmaster Michael Surran

I've recently begin incorporating streaming audio and video presentations on our website. What does this mean? This means you will be able to listen in on some of our chapels. You be able to see video clips from special events going on at GHCA. It gives us an ability to offer a whole new realm of content to help you be an even greater part of GHCA.

Mark Jago on TVWhen I say "streaming" video / audio, this means that the website server sends the information (the data) to your computer while you watch / listen to the file. The advantage of this is that you don't have to wait a long period of time while a file downloads onto your computer. However, if your Internet connection is slow or congested, the presentation may stutter and pause. If this happens, you can select the option to "download" the presentation.  This allows you save the file on your computer before playing it. You will have to wait until the file is completely downloaded before being able to play it, but it will play smoothly and you can see it any time from your own computer without having to go online.

Please understand that streaming video over a phone line cannot match the quality of a normal TV broadcast or VCR. The amount of data to fully represent the quality of a VHS recording is tremendous, and would take DAYS to download over a dialup modem. Instead, we must compress the video using technologies such as RealPlayer and Windows Media Player. The video will be smaller and sometimes the quality will look "blocky" (especially during high-motion). At this time, we compress our video and audio for 56K modems. In the future we may also offer high-bandwidth options as well.

In order to play most of the video and audio content, you will need to download a free product called RealPlayer Basic 8 (or greater). Please note, you do NOT need the plus version, but can download the FREE basic RealPlayer in order to view our video and listen to our audio.  There will also be some recordings in Windows Media format, however, most computers running Windows has the player included.

If you have trouble accessing our video or audio files, feel free to email me at webmaster@ghca.com for assistance. I hope you enjoy this new avenue of content distribution, and we hope to do even more with "cutting edge" technologies in the future.  God bless and enjoy!

-Michael Surran
